About 15 years ago, my parents added a gorgeous, multi-level stone patio on their traditional ranch home. There were many bumps in the road, and I was skeptical of both the stress and the cost of such a major construction project in their backyard. Would it ultimately be worth it? Over a decade later, I think everyone who has ever spent time at my parents’ house would agree that it was absolutely worth it. My parents spend entire weekends out there when the weather is nice. When my family visits, the adults can sip cocktails out back while the kids run around the yard. The beautiful landscaping makes the area more like a resort, and we all just love it.
Adding a deck or patio to a home is a surefire way to add value. Plus, I promise you, you’ll enjoy your outdoor space so much more if it’s pretty. Patios can come in simple cement slabs to more elaborate set-ups, so they are perfect for all budgets. They also require less upkeep than a wooden deck, which needs to be maintained more than a stone or cement patio. Patios are also much easier to DIY than a deck. You usually don’t need building permits to install one. Need some inspiration? Check out these perfect patios for every budget.
Using simple materials in a high style way makes this patio something special. This project could easily be tackled over a few weekends. I love the modern look of this set up, and all that seating!

Pea gravel is an excellent, inexpensive patio material that is perfect in this outdoor firepit area. The lights and planters make this a festive little getaway.

This picture may not be styled quite as much as the others, but I just love this design. A brick patio is so classic and pretty. Circular patios fit in nicely with more organic landscaping. If you’re looking for weathered brick, you can sometimes find leftovers on Cragislist!

As much as I love a fire pit, you cant beat an outdoor fireplace. The chimney means no smoke blowing in your face, but you can still make all the s’mores you can eat.

I love how modern these giant pavers look in this grassy yard. This is a simple design, but it’s executed so well–perfect for smaller yards, where you want to keep as much grass as possible. Plus, you can mow right over it!
