Are you a big spring cleaner? I’m not exactly all in, but I usually hit some areas that I skip throughout the year. For me, that means giving the walls and baseboards a good scrub, and paying some special attention to my hardwood floor.
We have tried lots of different floor cleaners over the years, everything from waxes to polishes and even some pricey kits that promised to “refinish” your hardwood floor. Nothing was really the silver bullet I was looking for. A couple years ago, I was staging my home to sell it, and I finally hit on a combination of products that left my hardwood floor gleaming.
Step 1: Cleaning
Most hardwood floors (especially older ones) have many years of wax and polishes built up on them. If you don’t take some time to remove all that gunk, you are never going to get your floors looking like new. I found that conventional cleaners just weren’t cutting through all those layers. Finally, I searched online for a recipe for a hardwood floor cleaner, and I found a simple solution that does the job beautifully. It’s literally three ingredients, and you will not believe the crud that you’ll wipe off of your floors!
Here’s the magic formula for awesome hardwood floor cleaner:
That’s it!Just pour the ingredients into a spray bottle, and you’re ready to go! You can add some drops of essential oil, if you want it to smell nice (I like lemon, eucalyptus, or tee tree oil). I am always shocked at how squeaky clean this gets my floors. Don’t be freaked out by the rubbing alcohol–it doesn’t dry the wood out at all. It just cuts through the grime!
After I’ve swept or vacuumed my floors, I spray this on a section and wipe it with a cotton wash cloth. If I’m feeling lazy, I’ll wrap my cloth around a Swiffer mop head and use that to wipe the floors.
Step 2: Wax On
Once you’ve got your floors nice and clean, it’s time to protect them and shine them up. Again, I’ve used dozens of waxes and polishes over the years, and my all-time favorite is this one:
Johnson One Step No Buff Wax (less than $10 from most home improvement stores) is an old-timey product to be sure, but it is simple to apply, dries to a hard and shiny finish, and lasts for weeks. I love it.
Give this process a shot , and you’ll enjoy beautifully clean and shiny hardwood floors till fall!
